Partner's Day ride - Sunday 23 February

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Over recent years, NSCC has arranged the Partners Day ride, where partners and family members can come out on a relaxing bunch ride around Hornsby.

We leave from the old Hornsby pool at 7.30am and ride about 15kms along quiet streets, returning for breakfast at Hornsby Plaza. The ride takes about an hour and breakfast about an hour and half ... seems to be the right balance.

Justin Morris shares his thoughts on achieving a balance in life, place, cycling and achievement

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Life has taken a few more twists & turns since I last wrote a blog. I have been back to Australia, back to America, back to Australia, back to America, to Europe and then back to America since November. The travel, although fantastic to see so much of the world, was beginning to take a toll on my body and inevitably my training. Hence, I have now found myself where it feels like a my home away from home, and excited to have been here in one spot for 3 weeks straight!

The place is Traverse City, in far Northern Michigan. If you would like to hear how I ended up here, lend me your ear one day and I will tell you a long, beautiful story. To cut a long story short, I followed my heart & my smile. Following this charter has made me feel truly happy, alive and motivated.

Some people think the far north is a crazy place to live. But I love it here! The incessant snow and freezing temperature’s are a real novelty for this bloke from a sunburnt country. Each morning is an excitement to see how much snow I get to shovel off the driveway with my brand new shovel in my brand new snow boots! Most importantly however, I feel grounded, warm and included by the people here. From travelling the world I have found that where the people work hard they are often the friendliest, most genuine & down to earth people you will meet. Mere existence is hard work in Michigan, each day begins with the back breaking snow shovelling I mentioned to access your car, then driving is a struggle and often ends in a snow bank where everyone offers a helping hand to help each other out. The community is bound to each other, as up here, we need each other to survive. Staying warm requires work, chopping firewood, and scraping ice.

Brad is fast tracked into the National Track Championships and climbs to the top of the Heap

Who watched Cycling Central’s coverage of the National Track Championships on last Saturday and Sunday nights? NSCC's Brad Heap featured in both shows.

Brad Heap is one of the very talented riders that have come through the Junior Academy, training under coaches Helmut Vetisch and Grahame Heap (Brad's father).

Brad was selected to ride for NSW Track Team about 6 weeks ago and went into intensive training with NSW coach Sean Eadie in the lead up.

Proudly wearing his NSW uniform, Brad gets onto the podium to be awarded with two National Medals, Bronze in the JM19 Kierin and Silver in JM19 Team Sprint. There was also a 250m TT held on the Tuesday which while not part of the nationals had all states riders competing. Brad achieved a 2nd place in JM19 category.

The meeting was held at the Adelaide Superdrome last Wednesday 29th Jan to Saturday 1st Feb and had international riders from Korea and Japan competing.

NSCC Partner's ride and breakfast - 23 February

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

This ride is the "Partner's ride" where NSCC members encourage their partners come out on a relaxed ride for about 12-15kms from Hornsby pool. We plan to roll at 7.30am.

In past years the ride has been very successful.

Terrain is mostly flat and traffic is not busy. Pace is generally 18-20kph and no-one gets dropped. And it does not matter what type of bike you use.

So, get your partner out onto the pedals and have a go. Route will take us from the pool then out along Somerville Road Hornsby and return to a café for breakfast.

Two incidents remind me that road safety and ettiquette cuts both ways

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

On Saturday 25th January, there were two separate incidents involving a NSCC bunch and heavy vehicles. The first was a local bus overtaking the bunch across double lines in a reckless and unnecessary manner, not once but twice. The second and more serious, was road rage from an impatient truck driver aggrieved that he had missed a red light! Further down Mona Vale Road, the same truck driver swerved at the bunch in a very dangerous manner.

NSCC's Saxon Irvine reflects on his 2014 Nationals race

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

As I prepared for my second crack at nationals I went into my prep being a bit more realistic about my chances and what I hoped to get out of this race. I rated this race as B on my seasons calendar due to my chances of being and wanting to be at my peak so early in the season and knowing that every pro that was pinning a number to their back was going to be in it to win or make sure they set it up for their team mates.

The excitement of the RHMR event gets captured

NSCC was very lucky to have had some talented photographers applying their skills at the RHMR on 5th Jaunary.

Chris Belyea and Dallas Thomas captured the action from the sidelines at the Robert Hodgson Memorial Race. Their work at the race was outstanding and received a lot of praise when published on social media. In particular, their photo of the winner Michael Jaeger was an instant internet favourite. Chris' and Dallas' work can be accessed at http://www.chrisbelyea.com.au/Clients/Hodgson-Me... and please use the password "RHM" to gain access.

NSCC Skin suits - any further interest in placing an order

Are you looking for the extra few watts? This CAPO wind-cheating, long sleeved skinsuit might make all the difference!

NSCC has developed this product with CAPO and it is worthwhile for time-trialists, track riders, and anyone looking for an edge in racing.

This is not a stock item and NSCC can only place an group order once it gets sufficient orders from members. So far 7 riders have purchased a skin suit and we are looking for a few more to complete the order to CAPO.

So if you are interested, please go to the web shop and place your order ASAP.

NSCC Christmas ride - Saturday 21 December
Each year, on the last ride before Christmas, NSCC members have traditionally adorned their machines with tinsel and other decorations and have taken to the streets. This has seen riders in Santa clothes, hats and antlers, and some with flashing lights along their handle bars and top tubes, all in an effort to celebrate the Christmas season.

So this year is no different. Whether you are on La Reve, Guns and Roses or El Pres, spruce up your bike and get in the spirit for our Saturday Christmas rides.

Beauie Worlds December Race Report

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

There was a great turnout for the final Beauie World Titles of 2013 - weather was very kind to us and the rain held off for a great day's racing in mild but humid conditions.
Tensions and emotions were high as riders in all grades were chasing the special prizes of Xmas hams - donated by Craig's butchery West Gordon - luckily no vegans won today as Craig forgot the tofu (next time eh Brett?).

A special thanks to Kim Austen and George Mouhayet who have been the backbone of Beauie racing all year - fantastic work guys for keeping this famous race ticking along.
