2016 was the first year of the Northern Sydney Cycling Club’s ‘elite development’ program. With a solid squad of riders aged 16-23 aiming to take their racing to the next level, we have worked together to hone skills training, racing and in approaching NRS teams for an opportunity to race at the next level.

We completed a full NSW open calendar series of racing achieving some quality results. We also focussed on honing racing skills at a club level in Sydney. At the beginning of 2016 we had most riders still in B grade club. Now the entire squad is competing and achieving podium’s at A grade club all around Sydney.

The training days have been a highlight, run by former professionals Justin Morris and Michael Cupitt, riders have learnt all about the art of ‘swapping off’, ‘when to attack’ and ‘lead out trains’. We are looking forward to continuing the program in 2017 with 3 riders from the2016 squad progressing to the NRS level we have a few new faces to the squad. Stay tuned for an update on the 2017 squad soon.

Tom Green:

After an early 2016 plagued by sickness and injury, Tom recovered and soared to new heights in the sport. With a dedication to training Tom has been achieving top level A grade results, when the road points up Tom comes to the fore! The lean machine scored 2 2nd placings at the international Tour of Tahiti in 2016. Tom has progressed to the NRS squad GPM-Stulz for the 2017 season. Best wishes Tom!

Dan started 2016 after a successful 2015 at B grade club level. Dan progressed quickly last year. Rising to div.1 in NSW open’s quickly after a top 10 in the NSW criterium championship and 1st place in the div.2 Wagga Wagga classic. He continued a rich vein form taking 4th place in div.1 Nowra-Sassafras state open. Dan has a solid endurance base with a solid kick, the perfect breakaway rider. Dan has for 2017 signed up with NRS squad AMR Renault racing’. GO Dan! Look for Dan at some of the big NRS races in 2017.

Angus Calder:

Angus would have more race days for 2016 than most. This consistent worker has fought hard this year to be a well-respected A grade rider. His result sheet for 2016 is pages long. Notably 1st Canberra Tour(B grade), 1st Greenhills Road Race and a 3rd place on a stage at Tour of Tahiti. This lean whippet will be continuing his trajectory of strength and speed into 2017 having just signed up with NRS squad ‘Nero Racing’. Angus will now be racing at Australia’s top level! Great to see Angus thriving at the next level recently finishing 24th at the Oceania U23 UCI championship.

New to the sport in 2016 Jack has been a stand out performer and has shown huge improvement over a very short period of time. After finishing this years 238km Grafton to Inverell in the first group (B) with no front derailleur Jack kept his improving streak and is now a regular place getter in A grade races across Sydney. The strong as an ox Jack!
