Bathurst Weekend 2017

A fantastic weekend was enjoyed by almost 50 Northern Sydney members at the B2B Cycling Festival in Bathurst over the first weekend in April.

It’s very hard to pick a single stand out but some of the great memories I will take away include the close and fast Crit racing in town on Saturday afternoon with Michael Potter dishing out the pain, seeing so many friends and familiar faces, being astonished at Mark Craig’s loud/bad taste shirts, dining with Club mates and good friends but by far for me was riding with my son and his friend on his first big ride (the 70km Blayney to Bathurst). Mates were very understanding only calling me soft and a woose about dozen times!

Northern Sydney was so well represented with members of the Club dominating the racing across the weekend and participating in all the races - Hill Climb, Crit Racing and the two Blaney to Bathurst events. Most categories were covered by Red and Black with members including Helmut’s Juniors, Mad Dog’s “Dog Squad”, social, racing and any number of Masters categories.

For me, apart from the great social interaction at both the “The Hub” café and the Irish Pub on Saturday night, the spirit of the Club was typified with members cheering each other over the line and the almost compulsory laps of Mount Panorama!

Hill Climb

U23 was Won outright by Michael Potter and placing in his category, Stuart Grieve

Bathurst Crits

We saw Simon Davies mix it up in Div 2 and in Div 1, Michael Potter entertained every lap! Jeff Tippet came 2nd in Div 4 and also picked up both of the primes as well.

B2B - 110km (Total field of over 1,200 starters)

41 NSCC riders competed or 3.4% of the field!
2nd outright – Marcus Culey (2:35.14)
3rd outright – Michael Potter (2:35.55)
Male age category 3rd place - Tai Huynh (2:53.02)
Female age category 2nd place – Kate Olgers (3:20.35)

B2B – 70km (592 starters)

7 riders took part.
Male age category 2nd place – Fergus Mackie (1:50.08)
Male age category 3rd place – Justin Morris (1:50.55)

A definite honourable mention (and for some a surprise) to all those who qualified for a well-earned trip to Albi, France in August to the world champs as the B2B was a UCI World Championship qualifying event.

A great event made better because not only did we not get rained on, but we got to ride with friends, family on closed roads! Look forward to seeing more NSCC members there in 2018.

Thanks to Anthony Ryan for the report and photos
